The basic facts: I’m a twenty-whatever woman of colour who is also bi and working-class. I immigrated from the Caribbean when I was very young and my feelings of not belonging are rampant in my life. I tend to focus on those things when I think about anti-oppression, but I’m trying to expand my mind so I don’t end up redoing the same thing. I am working towards an undergraduate degree in Women & Gender Studies and another major which is just as interesting and social-justice-y but is such a small department, I’m afraid it would give me away. My degree is the best thing to happen to me so far.
There are certain things I want to learn about and will use my blog to reflect on them. I want to be able to move past my academic learning and put it to better use. I’d rather not pontificate in a stuffy room. Instead, I can preach on the Internet!
I read a lot of blogs, but I rarely comment out of fear of saying the wrong thing. I’m trying to change that.
I am a huge television fan. It’s eaten a large chunk of my life. I am not a passive television viewer. I don’t like letting things slide because ‘it’s just television.’ I am very concerned about media representation of identities, and you will often find me critiquing shows I watch because that generic black dude just keeps dying and demons seem to prefer killing women.*
Also, I tend to use sarcasm a lot. I’m not sure that translates well onto the Internet, especially since I tend to use sarcasm when I talk. I am very long-winded and sometimes I seem like I don’t have a point. I have many points. I’m a very pointy individual.
* There’s less of this than I anticipated because life has taken away my television-watching time. Trust me, it hurts me more than it hurts you.

RE: I am a huge television fan.
Understatement much?
I’d try to refute it, but I’d be lying.
Ooh I’m totally the same way about television. I think people are surprised at how much television I watch and then when I try to explain that I have a deconstructive relationship with the media, they think I’m trying to make excuses.
Anyway I’m so glad to have found this blog. Keep writing!!

Hiya!
I just wanted to say hello to another Canadian-Torontonian feminist! Hello!
Nice to see you in these parts!
If you ever wanna hang out – send me off an email! it’s good to vent about shit in real life sometimes.

Thanks for the comments and warm welcome!
OBW, I definitely get that as well. Television is one of the most immediate mediums for many people, and it’s not as though tv programming is objective!
AD, I wouldn’t be surprised if we’ve seen each other around!
hi there,
I’m not sure where you are based but I wanted to draw your attention to an event in Chicago that will be happening in Spring of 2009.
You can check out the link above for lots of details.
Anyhow, I am a south asian actor in chicago, and am currently working on thinkTank 2009 which will be a production that I am in with Kelly Tsai and Idris Goodwin, fellow slam poets.
We will be presenting a performance on the representation of minorities in the media. Its particularly well funded and part of the award winning theatre company Remy Bumppo.
If you would like to be involved somehow, featuring our site on your blog, seeing the show or help in spreading the word, that would be great! So check out the site and hit me up.
peace
Usman Ally
Wow, thanks for the heads up, Usman. I’ll definitely follow it and repost it to the blog. I’m located in Toronto, but this looks incredible.
I must say, that I could not agree with you in 100%, but it’s just my IMHO, which could be very wrong.
p.s. You have a very good template . Where have you got it from?
