So, I heard Kyle Payne (of ‘hey, I’m a feminist but I’mma go dabble in sexual assault’ fame) got himself six months. He then gave a lousy apology that was all about him and whatever. I’d write more, but my friend Lori (The Classiest Lady You Know), who I do Friday night rages with over IM, is angry enough for both of us. In this post, she says:

Pain broke down crying on sentencing day but of course his apology was not all about him and it was truly heartfelt. The victims mother rightly pointed out that because her daughter was unconscious no one will every truly know exactly what was done to her and this stays with her on a daily basis. I am sure the little shit thought that 6 months was too much time but if I were sentencing him, I would have given him something to really cry about.
I am so glad her mother told him to stick it. I don’t know why he thinks any of us cares about his motivations or why he did it. He deserves no sympathy whatsoever. Six goddamn months! I’m sure the woman he assaulted will forget about it after six months, right?
I care about his story, and he has my support. As a matter of fact he has the support of a lot of people who are willing to give him another chance. And yes, many of us are former victims who know that men like Kyle will most likely never re-offend.
The recidivism rate for sex offenders is 3-5%, much lower than for other crimes. You have a much higher chance of getting creamed by a repeat drunken driver, then being assaulted by men like Kyle.

In contrast, 2004 Bureau of Justice stats. study shows that the recidivism rate for other crimes is at 69%.
